You will notice on some of the Session Plan, the positions are referred to by number rather than position names. USSF has decided to use a numbering system to identify positions on the pitch rather than position names. This method is used by the NCAA. USSF, and FIFA. If you have been watching any international soccer matches, you will notice the announcers referring to positions by the number rather than the old position names.

The 11 position numbers and old names for 11 v 11 are as follows:

  1. Goalkeeper
  2. Right Outside Back
  3. Left Outside Back
  4. Right Center Back
  5. Left Center Back
  6. Defensive Center Midfielder
  7. Right Winger
  8. Center Midfielder
  9. Center Forward
  10. Attacking Center Midfielder
  11. Left Winger

GK: 1

Backs: 2, 3, 4, 5

Midfielders: 6, 8, 10

Forwards: 7, 9, 11

For 7 v 7 and 9 v 9, not all of the positions are used but the same numbering system is used. For example: 7 v 7 would be using: 1, 2, 3, 6, 7, 8 (or 10), 11.
